Hurricane Preparedness
Hurricane season is June 1 to November 30
Peak activity is typically in August & September
While we cannot predict the exact paths of potential storms, forecasts become more accurate 2-3 days out, and the National Hurricane Center provides up-to-date information
Stay Informed: Regularly check the National Weather Service and local news for updates on hurricane paths, intensity, and evacuation orders.
Understand terms like Tropical Storm Watch, Hurricane Watch, Tropical Storm Warning, and Hurricane Warning
Cycles of a hurricane: Approach, Arrival, & Aftermath
The hurricane eye wall is the most intense part, with damaging winds, storm surge, & flooding as major threats
Follow official directions & always prioritize safety
In the event of an approaching Hurricane or Tropical Storm:
Your hosts will reach out to you, or you can reach out to them, for instructions on what steps to take
They may arrange for the Hurricane shutters to be installed
They may instruct you to secure outdoor items (cushions, lounge chairs, etc.) in the garage, or arrange to have it done.
Home Preparation: Ensure the home is secure. get emergency supplies and staples, secure loose items outside, and have a plan for evacuation if needed.
Evacuation:
If local or state governments orders an evacuation, you must evacuate immediately.
Road conditions may deteriorate quickly due to heavy rains and winds.
Avoid & do not attempt to drive through flooded roads.
Stay In Place: If an evacuation isn’t required & you plan to stay:
Create an essential supply kit in advance to avoid panic-driven shortage; include non-perishable food, water, first aid, hygiene items, flashlights, radio, important documents, & more
Fill your gas tank in advance, have cash on hand, charge cell phones, save energy, stock up on water, & freeze fresh food items
Stay away from windows and doors during strong winds
